Chapter 16 – Special Division!

“Special Division?! Have they discovered my true identity?”

Lu Yu frowned slightly, though his heart remained calm. Even if they had identified him, it didn’t matter—he was no longer just an ordinary person without any power to resist.

He now possessed the Morningstar-grade Fear Balloon, and soon, the Void Shadow Spider would hatch. With two Morningstar-level combat assets, plus four powerful abilities of his own, his strength was enough to level several cities—he was effectively a walking nuclear bomb.

At this point, he had earned the right to talk with the Special Division.

But unless absolutely necessary, Lu Yu didn’t want to become hostile to them after all, he was still a member of the human race.

While humanity struggled to survive, their weakness was relative. Compared to the eldritch gods, humans might seem frail but to monsters, humans could still be immensely powerful.

If the Federation went all out, the experts they could deploy would be unimaginable. There were certainly existences above Morningstar rank.

Besides, if they had confirmed his identity, they wouldn’t be ringing his doorbell right now—he’d already be surrounded by elites.

It was more likely just a post-disaster follow-up.

After each incursion, some monsters would slip into human homes to hide, secretly feeding and evolving by consuming flesh. Cleaning up such cases was part of the Special Division’s usual duties.

With that in mind, Lu Yu got up and threw on a brown coat. To avoid the door being kicked open, he shouted loudly

“I’m coming!”

“Okay!”

The voice outside responded, sounding relieved.

Creak!

The door slowly opened. Lu Yu saw three people standing outside—two middle-aged men and a sweet-looking long-haired girl.

They wore black uniforms with golden runic insignias on the shoulders, clearly marked with the words “Special Operations Division.”

As soon as Lu Yu opened the door, both men instinctively placed their hands near their waists, ready to react at a moment’s notice.

This wasn’t out of suspicion toward Lu Yu personally, but a habit forged through countless ambushes. Cultists and monsters could disguise themselves as anythin—pregnant women, children, elderly people to evoke sympathy before attacking.

Every line in the operation manuals had been written in blood.

The girl, by contrast, appeared a bit inexperienced, though not careless she instinctively took a small step back.

Upon seeing Lu Yu in his coat, they all visibly relaxed. He showed no signs of mutation or eldritch corruption.

Still, to ensure he wasn’t just a disguised monster, the man on the left stepped forward with a polite smile:

“Apologies if this seems intrusive. We noticed your window was damaged from below.

To prevent the possibility of monsters hiding inside, may I ask—Did something happen just now?

We’re from the Special Division. Here are our IDs, complete with official codes. Feel free to verify them online if needed.”

The man was courteous and well-spoken, instantly leaving a good impression. Lu Yu didn’t mind letting them inspect his home—after all, they were just doing their job to protect civilians.

As long as they didn’t uncover his secrets.

Lu Yu nodded, leaning forward slightly with a “startled survivor” expression and said:

“Yeah, a spider-type monster smashed through my window and burst in, looking like it wanted to eat me. Thankfully, I was hiding in a closet in my room, so it didn’t find me. I waited a long time before crawling out... My place is a mess. Just my luck.

By the way, have those spider monsters been dealt with?”

His expression shifted from fear to annoyance as he spoke. Casually, he pushed the door open wider, letting the trio clearly see the chaotic interior of his home.

Hiding things only draws suspicion, so he was completely open and unguarded.

He felt his acting was Oscar-worthy. If the Academy existed in this world, he might just walk away with a golden statuette.

The Special Division agents, of course, had no idea what was running through Lu Yu’s mind. The serious-looking man, seeing Lu Yu’s cooperation, entered for a quick inspection.

Lu Yu let out a sigh, but inside he was quietly proud of his performance.

One of the other men mistook Lu Yu’s expression for distress over his broken furniture and offered comfort:

“Honestly, you’re lucky. Your place just got wrecked a bit. The guy next door—He got stuck in webbing and melted…”

He shook his head grimly, clearly disturbed by the image of a man dissolving like a burning candle.

“Captain, that’s enough!”

The girl beside him, her face pale, seemed nauseous from the mental image. It clearly left a mark on her psyche.

While the inspection continued, Lu Yu casually struck up a conversation with the girl. With his experience, he easily found out her name—Ning Xin, a gentle-sounding name. The two men were her team leader and the one inspecting inside was “Old Zhang”.

Realizing they were here for cleanup duty, Lu Yu pretended to ask offhandedly:

“Must be tough doing cleanup work. Girls with strong nerves like you are rare.”

Ning Xin, encouraged by the compliment, looked a bit brighter and joked

“Actually, I’m not part of the cleanup team, I usually handle comms. But we were short on staff today, so I got reassigned.”

Lu Yu smiled, continuing the banter

“Wow, really squeezing everything out of one person. Did they at least give you overtime pay?”

“As if!”

She rolled her eyes with a sigh.

“And they even dumped a new assignment on us. Said we need to find the awakened—”

“Ning Xin, time to go.”

Her team leader cut her off with a frown.

Realizing she’d said too much, Ning Xin stuck her tongue out, trying to play it off cutely.

Meanwhile, Old Zhang, after checking the living room, began heading toward the bedroom.

Lu Yu’s eyes narrowed slightly. He didn’t move, but a dangerous aura suddenly radiated from him—cold and razor-sharp, making the already frigid night feel even more biting.

Was it time to take action?
