Chapter 19 - Childhood friend

Hearing the voice, Lu Yu turned his head and saw a striking figure.

Dressed in a white tracksuit, her smooth, dark hair flowed down her shoulders, perfectly complementing her delicate face. A few fine beads of sweat dotted her forehead, but instead of detracting from her beauty, they added a youthful vitality that made people unconsciously steal another glance.

After she entered the breakfast shop, several men couldn’t help sneaking peeks at her. One of them, who had a girlfriend, even got a painful pinch for it.

Lu Yu looked at the beautiful girl and recognized her—it was Tang Wan, his high school classmate.

They had studied together for three years, but their relationship was nothing more than casual acquaintances. Lu Yu wasn’t fond of crowds, unlike the other boys who formed cliques. He preferred sitting alone reading, so he didn’t have many friends, and after graduation, even fewer connections.

Tang Wan was different. Despite her cool demeanor, she was strikingly beautiful and athletically gifted, making her a prominent figure in school.

He had borrowed pens from her a few times, but being self-aware and uninterested in chasing such popular girls, their interactions had stopped at that.

In this world, education wasn’t just about administrative work—it was also about preserving human history and culture, passing it down through generations. Studying was not just learning knowledge, but inheriting the flame of humanity. It was civilization and writing that allowed humans to be called a "race."

That’s why Lu Yu’s favorite subject was history. Unfortunately, the textbooks had clearly been edited, with many contents either omitted or censored.

Since she had greeted him, Lu Yu couldn’t pretend not to see. Smiling, he said,

“Tang Wan, you came out to grab breakfast too?”

“Mm. Just finished exercising. Came to eat.”

Tang Wan replied succinctly and went to order from the shopkeeper. Lu Yu didn’t say much else; after all, they were just classmates.

Although she was beautiful, after experiencing the supernatural world, Lu Yu’s true desire was for the power to dominate everything.

As for women?

Could they be as fun as editing monsters?

If it was about beauty, he’d rather extract mermaid and snake materials to create a Medusa in this world—far more interesting.

But before long, Tang Wan came over with her xiaolongbao and soy milk and gently asked,

“Mind if I sit here?”

Lu Yu glanced around the somewhat crowded breakfast shop and figured she probably couldn’t find another seat, so he nodded in agreement.

Tang Wan sat down and began eating. Her graceful movements made it look as though she were dining at a high-end restaurant rather than eating simple buns—pleasing to the eye.

Lu Yu looked at her and couldn’t help thinking that beautiful people even made eating look pleasant. No wonder people always said to find a good-looking partner, at least arguing would feel nicer.

Maybe he should eat in front of a mirror next time. Since he was so handsome, he might as well use it.

Just as Lu Yu was caught up in narcissism, Tang Wan suddenly asked,

“Last night the north district was attacked by a bunch of spider monsters. Are you okay?”

“If I wasn’t okay, how would I be sitting here eating breakfast?”

Lu Yu rolled his eyes and couldn’t help but complain about her question.

Tang Wan nodded and said nothing more, quietly continuing her meal.

Lu Yu also disliked talking while eating, so her silence suited him perfectly.

After finishing, Lu Yu placed ten yuan on the table, nodded to the shopkeeper, and turned to leave.

As he stepped out the door, Tang Wan lifted her head and gazed at his back with a touch of melancholy in her sapphire eyes, softly murmuring,

“I really don’t know how to make conversation…”

Then, she noticed the disposable chopsticks Lu Yu had left on the bamboo steamer. Her eyes locked onto them, and she involuntarily swallowed, falling into a state of inner conflict.

She glanced around, saw that everyone was still focused on eating, and with a decisive motion, reached out, grabbed the chopsticks, and slipped them into her pocket.

After that, a faint blush crept across her otherwise cool face. She threw ten yuan on the table and hurried out of the shop.

What she didn’t know was that her strange behavior had been seen by the balding middle-aged shopkeeper who had just walked out of the kitchen. He couldn’t help but sigh,

“Such a good girl… turns out to be a weirdo…”

Meanwhile, on another street, Lu Yu was completely unaware of Tang Wan’s peculiar act. Head lowered, he walked along the sidewalk.

Although the north district had suffered a monster attack, the other areas were unaffected. Life had to go on, and the city continued its operations.

Today, Lu Yu wasn’t just wandering aimlessly—he was here to test one of his skills.

Following his map’s navigation, he crossed several streets and finally arrived at his destination:

Hangzhou City East District Flower and Bird Market.
