Chapter 26 – Night Market

Hang City Northern Suburbs, No.17 East Baihua Alley.

Lu Yu, dressed in a yellow coat and wearing a sinister smiling mask, arrived at the location.

He had originally thought his outfit was already mysterious enough but to his surprise, everyone else was wearing masks too. Chicken, dog, monkey masks—There were even people with full black ski masks like bank robbers,

And someone had on a geisha mask and the geisha mask was ghostly pale with an eerie design and the wearer? A massive man over two meters tall!

A real tough guy… with the heart of a schoolgirl, apparently.

The giant with the geisha mask stood behind a white-haired figure wearing a fox mask. From his coat, he pulled out two invitations and handed them to the gatekeeper. After checking them, the gatekeeper respectfully nodded.

“Please enter.”

Other masked attendees followed in an orderly line. Everyone entered quietly.

When one ordinary person tried to sneak in, the gatekeeper easily tossed him aside with one hand.

That’s when the crowd realized that the gatekeeper himself was a third-tier Awakened.

Watching as everyone entered with invitations, Lu Yu frowned and muttered quietly to himself:

“Looks like I’ll need to use other methods.”

As the words left his lips, his shadow began to ripple, releasing a powerful surge of shadow energy, which transformed into a thin veil of darkness that cloaked his entire body as if he had draped the night sky over himself.

The black shadow veil blended with his yellow coat. Rather than clashing, the black and yellow fused into a chilling, deathly aesthetic.

With that eerie smiling mask on top, he looked like a grim reaper descending upon the mortal world, ready to harvest souls.

This was one of Lu Yu’s latest breakthroughs—an advancement of his skill [Shadow Servent], allowing him not only to summon shadow servents but to wield shadow energy more freely.

The form he now wore mimicked a sliver of presence from a being deep within the Shadow Realm.

Even if it was just a minuscule fraction less than a ten-thousandth of the real thing it still carried an uncanny resemblance.

And even the tiniest echo of such an indescribably terrifying entity was enough to unsettle anyone.

The moment Lu Yu appeared, he drew the attention of everyone in the area. No mask could hide the shock in their eyes.

A youth in a monkey mask stared at the black veil in horror, backing away while trembling:

“Who is that?! Just seeing that black veil… I feel like I'm falling into eternal death!”

His companion in a pig mask cautiously added:

“That aura is terrifying… even a glance feels like it’s suffocating me!”

Other attendees near the entrance heard the commotion and came over to take a look, whispering among themselves:

“Isn’t this just a regular night market exchange? Why would someone that terrifying show up?”

“That’s some seriously powerful shadow energy… and there’s something dangerous about it too!”

“Damn… talk about overdoing it with the theatrics!”

Lu Yu saw their reactions and immediately realized he had a problem.

His original plan was to appear slightly mysterious, claim he'd lost his invitation, and bluff his way inside.

But now, with everyone staring at him like some eldritch horror, it was a bit too much.

Maybe he should’ve used some Hellfire instead!

Wait—no. If he used Hellfire, that would expose his other persona.

That persona was meant to be his secret “powerhouse” identity, one he’d eventually use to deal with the military. He couldn’t casually use it here.

What Lu Yu didn’t realize was that the “powerhouse persona” he created had already become a taboo-level legend, rumored to have crawled out from the depths of time itself.

If he had used that identity here… people might’ve actually passed out from fear.

But now what?

Lu Yu pondered what excuse he could use to sneak inside.

While he was thinking, the gatekeeper suddenly rushed over, bowed respectfully, and said:

“Esteemed one, have you also come to attend tonight’s Night Market?”

Of course, Lu Yu thought. Why else would I show up in the middle of nowhere? To watch you weirdos cosplay?

Seriously, everyone’s taking the mask game even further than I am.

But instead of saying too much and risking blowing his cover, Lu Yu deliberately lowered his voice and said:

“Just passing by.”

If he said he was here for the Night Market, the lack of an invitation would raise questions—better to pretend he just happened to be in the area.

Yes, just a coincidence. If the guy didn’t buy it, Lu Yu was fully prepared to convince him physically.

The gatekeeper was thrilled by the reply. Though the other party seemed cold, weren’t all powerhouses like that?

He wasn’t just some rookie Awakened. That black veil alone, condensed entirely from shadow energy was terrifying. Even if the man wasn’t at Morningstar rank, he couldn’t be far off.

Morningstar-level beings were near-mythical. Just having one utter a sentence to a “normal” Awakened like him was an enormous honor.

And if he could invite this mysterious figure to the Night Market, his boss would be overjoyed.

With someone like that attending, their humble gathering would gain serious prestige and next time, far more attendees would come.

And when the boss was happy… promotions, raises, and a path to the top awaited!

Heaven was truly smiling on him today!

Despite his inner excitement, the gatekeeper remained composed—powerful people like this and had surely seen everything. He couldn’t afford to appear childish or overeager.

As the “face” of the Night Market (literally the gatekeeper), he had to stay calm.

Steeling himself, he respectfully asked:

“Since you’re passing by, why not attend our Night Market as well? You may find something of interest. And our boss is warm and generous. He loves meeting new friends.”

He finished and waited nervously for Lu Yu’s answer.

Even though the mask had no facial expression, it emitted a terrifying pressure. Just standing near it made the gatekeeper’s legs shake.

‘So this… is what a true powerhouse feels like.’

He admired Lu Yu even more now, hoping dearly that this being would grace their Night Market with his presence.

What he didn’t know was that Lu Yu had just been worrying about how to sneak in and now, the gatekeeper had invited him in personally!

‘My guy… you just opened the VIP lane for me.’
